To Volunteer
Being a Big is one of the best decisions you’ll ever
make. It means having a chance to gain a new friend, and see
the world—and be seen—through fresh new eyes. No
matter where you are in life right now, being a Big will make
it better.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grand Island is looking for
volunteers in Hall, Hamilton, Howard & Merrick Counties!
School Based Mentoring:
Mentors in the School Based Program meet with an
elementary age child for 40 to 60 minutes, once a week, at
the elementary school. Scheduling is based on both
students’ schedule, such as lunch hour, study hall or
recess. Volunteers are expected to communicate with BBBSGI
staff on a monthly basis or as requested and be consistent,
reliable, respectful and safe. This program is open to high
school juniors or seniors who are at least 16 years old.
Community Based Mentoring:
In our “traditional” match, Bigs and Littles
get together on their own to share fun activities they both
enjoy. Matches typically meet for one or two hours a week.
This program is open to adults at least 18 years old.
Volunteers must make a moral commitment of one year.
Big Couples:
Are you and your spouse looking for something to do as a
couple? Sign up to become a Big Couple Match! Just as in our
Community Based Mentoring program, the match gets together on
their own to share fun activities one hour a week but, you
have the great opportunity to mentor a child together.
It’s a win-win situation for everyone!
Developing Youth Minority Leadership
(DYML):
This program is to allow a relationship to form between a
minority high school student and a professional adult, in
which the student will learn leadership skills by spending
time together doing both professional and social activities.
The high school student is also matched with a minority
elementary student so they can pass on the skills they have
learned.
“We really just wanted an excuse to do fun kid
activities!” (Tiffany & John, BBBSGI Big Couples
Match)
