What exactly is mentoring?

A mentor is an adult who, along with parents, provides young people with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and constructive example. Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help young people bring out strengths that are already there.

What are the benefits of mentoring?

Its fun, it’s simple, and it makes a profound difference in the life of a child. Sharing the benefit of your experiences with a growing child is a great way to give back to the community. Both Bigs and Littles tell us it’s the best thing they have ever done!

How do I become involved?

BBBS serves Hall, Hamilton, Howard, and Merrick counties. Fill out an application, which can be found under Volunteer or call us and let us know you want to mentor a child.

How much time does being a Big require?

It takes so little to make such a big difference. Depending on the program, we ask that you spend an hour a week with your Little for a period of one year or one school year. The time that you spend is arranged between you and your Little and their guardian. You don’t have to create time in your busy schedule – just incorporate your Little into your routine!

Will it cost me anything?

Being a mentor is free. The cost of activities between Bigs and Littles is up to you. Our matches also have access to discounts around the community; contact the BBBS office to find out more!

I don’t have much experience with children. How will I know what child is best for me?

Our Matching Support Team is made up of professionals in youth development. During your interviews, you will be asked a series of questions that will give them the information necessary to appropriately match you with the right Little. As we get to know you, the better we can make the match. Our professional staff is here to support you in your match.

How does Big Brothers Big Sisters differ from other youth organizations?

Big Brothers Big Sisters support your friendship.  When you are part of something Big, you are not alone.  Each match is supported by professional staff.  The Match Support Specialist will regularly check in with you and they are always available to answer questions.
